Let's get acquainted
I am Alice Mitchell, a native Oregonian, born in Portland 87 years ago. Raised by my mother, I grew up as an only child in a single parent home. Life without a father during the challenging times of the Great Depression resulted in the many poignant experiences that provided me with rich fuel for my new novel, "A Father's Heart."
As a married adult raising two children, I was deeply involved in civic organizations such as PTA and garden clubs. I held various offices over the years and learned the skills of leadership and public speaking which proved to be valuable assets.
When my grown children moved away and began lives of their own, writing became my passion. What started out as a few creative writing classes at Mt. Hood Community College became many years of hard and satisfying work. Entranced by writing, I just kept taking classes. I loved it!
My first book "Far Horizon" relates a fascinating six month period during 1966 when my husband Robert and I took part in an innovative exchange program of law enforcement officers. We traded places with an English Police Constable and experienced the most memorable adventure of our lives. The story was ripe for the telling and self published in 1987. The book stands on its own merit.
"A Father's Heart" patiently waited its turn. It started to emerge when my characters appeared and insisted on coming to life. I drew upon my childhood experiences without a father and the story of Maddie Miller came to be. I began the tale in 1990 and twelve years later the book was complete. PublishAmerica released it in late 2007.
My sights are set and I aim high for what is to come. "A Father's Heart" serves to uplift people of all ages and I look forward to offering a fresh opportunity to remember the importance of family and faith. In the book, Maddie sums it up by saying, 'If you pray long enough and hard enough, your dream will come true.'
And so it has.
